Everyone Rides in Simsbury
Unique bike-share program for persons with disabilities.
Simsbury is home to CT Adaptive Cycling, a not-for-profit, bike-share program established in 2011 that offers members free use of hand cycles and recumbent bicycles specially designed for persons with disabilities. More than 200 riders and their families enjoyed the trails last season around Simsbury, in West Hartford, and in trails in the Cheshire area.
CT Adaptive Cycling, sponsored by the Children & Adult Mobility Project, Inc., also partners with Gaylord Hospital Sports Association, The Hospital for Special Care, The Christopher Reeves Foundation and the Greater Harford YMCA. The program is believed to the only one of its kind in the country.
The 2012 season includes the first-ever, Veteran’s Bike Ride on Sunday, May 20, at 10 a.m., at the Performing Arts Center Parking Lot on Iron Horse Blvd. Veterans and families are encouraged to ride together and a limited number of adaptive bikes are available by reservation. Simsbury Free Bike offers standard bicycles and helmets for a $10 deposit.
This fundraiser for CT Adaptive Cycling includes 10- and 25-mile rides along the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail/East Coast Greenway. More advanced cyclists can enjoy a 50-mile-ride along Simsbury and Granby country roads. Other events will be added throughout the season. The current schedule:
Registration necessary for all rides. To learn more, e-mail mobilityproject@aol.com or check out CT Adaptive Ability website at http://www.campmobilityproject.org/cyclingproject.html "Like" us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Connecticutadaptivecycling
