Borrow a Bike and Ride the Greenway
Simsbury's bike-share program opens May 1 with six cycle centers.
The blue-and-yellow bicycles are easy to spot on Simsbury bike trails and local country roads. Anyone age 18 or older can sign out a bicycle, bike helmet, lock and map at several Simsbury Free Bike locations.
All that's required is a $10 returnable security deposit (cash or check) and proof of age. Bikes can be borrowed for up to 24 hours and must be used during daylight hours on paved trails and roads. A tandem bike has been added to the fleet this season, which runs from May 1- Nov. 1.
Last year, Simsbury Free Bike opened its doors and more than 150 riders borrowed bikes; more than half did not live in Simsbury and were visiting friends or family in town, or were looking for a free, fun activity. Simsbury Free Bike is a not-for-profit, volunteer organization sponsored by the Children & Adult Mobility Project. Bicycles are serviced and maintained out of a bike shop behind Andy's Supermarket, along Iron Horse Blvd. "Like" Simsbury Free Bike on Facebook at www.facebook.com/simsburyfreebike
You can borrow a bike from the following cycle centers:
The Bicycle Cellar, Cedar Hill Home Inspection, D.E. Jacobs Associates, Inc., Farmington Valley Trails Council, Harvest Cafe, Martocchio Music, Mitchell Auto Group, Paine's Inc., The Simsbury Inn, Red Oak Tavern, Sarah Byrnes Goldsmith and Signs Plus.
